The History of Sennelier Watercolours

Watercolours are rooted in the impressionist school who drew their inspiration from nature. Setting out to capture natural light, watercolour allowed the spontaneity, lightness of touch, fluidity and transparency which offered quick translation of vibration, shape and light. Paul Cézanne produced over 40 watercolours of Mont Sainte Victoire in Provence. William Turner in England and his work from the Normandy coast was turning watercolour painting into an artform in it's own right. He produced genuine masterpieces with this versatile medium. Artists love their spontaneity and radiance. There is an unmatched pleasure in seeing a painter playing with the light of the paper and the bold, intensity of glistening pigments, fleetingly intense and then swirling, mingling and finally blending with their neighbours to produce any number of gorgeous effects.

A watercolour tailored to modern artists

Sennelier spent many years developing L'Aquarelle. After consulting with watercolourists world wide, a panel of professional painters were invited to blind tests. After trying multiple formulas it was clear that what they wanted from watercolour was simple - luminosity, brilliance and intensity. L'Aquarelle Sennelier fulfils all of this and more.

A honey-based watercolour

At Sennelier they use only the finest ingredients and the purest real pigments. The high quality binders and preservatives are as natural as possible. Honey fulfils these roles, acting not only as a preservative but by adding incomparable brilliance and smoothness to the watercolours. Over time Sennelier has increased the ratio of honey to reinforce the longevity, radiance and luminosity of the colours. You must try it to understand!

Traditionally made watercolours

L'Aquarelle Sennelier has been produced using the same base recipes and techniques for more than a century.  Only the finest pigments and the best quality Kordofan Gum Arabic as a bonding agent. are used. The combination of natural ingredients creates colours that have a smooth and bright texture that produce lively, colourful shades. The mix of Gum Arabic and Honey offers incomparable quality of application, creating superb washes.

The base is  mixed with finely ground pigments. The pigments are wet with purified water (no mineral salts) for 24 hours before mixing with the bonding agent. This process ensures a blend of coloured pigments and bonding agents which brings out the full beauty of the colours.

The grinding process is also done in the traditional way - slowly. If you want to make good quality products, it takes time. The grindstones rotate slowly so as not to heat up the paste. This procedure is repeated over and over until the paste is as fine as possible. This rids the paint of any particles which may impair the perfect wash.

The exceptionally high quality of Sennelier Watercolour will help make your works even more intense due in part to the liveliness and purity of the hues. The colours mix so beautifully to create subtle, nuanced shades. The smooth, intense paints are a real pleasure to paint with. The honey will allow the tubes and pans to stand up to the passing of time, so that each time you pick up your paints to create, you will always be able to accurately translate the diversity of light, shape and hues with Sennelier.

Whilst we try extremely hard to accurately portray the colours by taking the photos in indoor light as they are likely to be displayed and using the hand painted samples, monitors and phone screens change the hues and tones and therefore the picture is for reference only.
