Beginning in the 11th century, Venice was the glassmaking capital of Europe. Yet by the late 13th century and in order to protect the City from fire, glassmaking was moved to the nearby island of Murano. Murano glass is to this day world renowned for both it's quality of it's craftsmanship and the beauty of it's designs.
